World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it could raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats. The level of the item can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, as well as its level. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat. There are a variety of theories on how the item level is calculated. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula which calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration that different benefits are valued differently and that gems found in sockets increase the item's value. This could result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is often very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item. However, this isn't the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, since the size of the area the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for example by adding a level to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances. Item Stats Stats on an item are a significant part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being “the best.” The stats of a base weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn boosted by the player's level. Upgrades to an item may boost its stats. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. For instance, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while items with rare tiers will be upgraded several times, at higher costs. Affixes are a different method to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can be used to give the item additional damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down the cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving a special name to the item. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade item s. It gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in the initial game run than later ones since most players prefer greater weapon scaling and defense over damage gains. In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the probability of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each item level. They can also be increased with the use of anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing. Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned with the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck or to boost the luck of the item to 140. Furthermore there are certain items, such as the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients. Item Failure Upgrades to items are costly and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item if it does not work. When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading that item, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to how much the success rates can be improved and the chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.. The performance of an can be affected by the luck of that item. Each item has an initial success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent. The upgrade overlays of the item are rendered above the items in the inventory. This may cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
